The proverbial back of the camel

The straw that broke the camel’s back. That is the title of the solo exhibition of Jeroen Cremers formerly Jerry Kowalsky, in Odapark – Center for contemporary art – Venray. Born as Jeroen Cremers in Reuver, Limburg, he is now making a name for himself as one of the up-and-coming artists in Berlin, where he works and lives.

His works of art in Venray reflect on how a concurrence of small circumstances can lead to a big event. The camel’s back can break through a single straw.

Trifles

As many straws as luggage, but there’s always one straw that breaks a camel’s back. We all recognize that. From our own lives and the lives of others. That one moment when a life changes forever. Or sometimes even an entire society enters a new phase. That moment when the proverbial back of a camel breaks. That’s what the upcoming solo exhibition of Jeroen  Cremers is all about.

Odapark curator Marijke Cieraad: “That one straw may be so small, but it is the end of a whole series of actions. Small things that at first seemed unimportant, but together throw everything upside down. Everyone experiences this. We die a little every day; death is a process and no living creature escapes it. The last straw always comes. For every camel, and for every human being.”

Action and reaction

After his studies at the academy in Maastricht and a number of wanderings through Amsterdam and southern Germany, Jeroen Cremers has been living and working in Berlin for a number of years now. He paints and makes sculptures. The latter made of cardboard, a building material far removed from eternity value. Nothing is forever.

As it turns out. Violence and conflict are an important theme for Jerry Kowalsky. Gripped by ‘iconoclasm’ and ‘iconoclasm’, Cremers investigates how mankind influences its own course, breaks down and rebuilds. As the last straw, a consequence of action and reaction; is there still something in itself? These and other questions come to the fore in The straw that broke the camel’s back.
