HUMAN ELECTRICITY
Group exhibition during Berlin Art Week
OPENING: 14.-18.09.2022
Electricity is energy flow. Without electricity, we could not move, think or feel. For energy to
flow, there needs to be connection, both within our cells and within the social organism. Our
way of connecting with each other is changing. Pandemic-era social distance and digital
communication are affecting our well-being, as individuals and on a global scale. What role
can art play here?
MaHalla opens its grand doors for five days and nights during the Berlin Art Week to
present, for the second time, its art festival HUMAN ELECTRICITY. The title for this year;
RE:CONNECT. A multicosm of artists, musicians and performers will come together on
7000m2 to celebrate art and connection with the audience. During daylight hours, visitors
will stroll through an exhibition of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and
installations, experience performance art, AR, sound installations and indigenous art in the
temporary Huni Kuin Embassy. After dark, there is a program of sound collectives, bands, DJs
and psychedelic light art until well into the night. Artist curated gastronomic offerings will
provide an inspiring culinary experience throughout the event.
Initiated in 2020 by filmmaker and social activist Ralf Schmerberg, the MaHalla art project
has been revitalising the factory halls of Germany’s oldest three-phase power plant in
Oberschöneweide for a good year with its experimental cultural program. At the site from
which Berlin was first electrified, an artistic laboratory is now being created. A space where
inspiration and transformation through collective art experiences can take place and new
forms of energy can be explored: Human Electricity.
